This simple recipe will teach you how to make fruit compote. Whether the fruit is fresh or frozen, you can use. It tastes great on toast, ice cream, yoghurt, pancakes, waffles, and more!
– 1 pound (16 ounces) fresh or frozen fruit (for the photos, I used fresh strawberries, peaches, and frozen blueberries) – 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup – Dash of salt – See optional flavoring ideas given above recipe
When getting the fruit ready, cut fresh peaches or strawberries into thin slices. It's okay to use whole small berries like blueberries or raspberries.
Use frozen fruit without defrosting or slicing. Mix your favourite fruit, sweetener, and salt in a medium saucepan. Stir the mixture occasionally as it boils over medium-high heat.
Fresh fruit takes 5 minutes, frozen fruit 10 minutes. Once boiling, lower heat to medium. Use a potato masher or serving fork to mash chunky fruit to your desired consistency.
Simmer, stirring often, until the compote is half its original volume, about 5 minutes. Take the compote off the heat. I'm happy with my compote, but if you want more sweetness, add it to taste.
Mash more to smooth it. Serve the compote after a few minutes of cooling. Cool leftover compote before covering and refrigerating for 10 days.
